As the holiday season approaches, you may feel inspired to do more to help your community and give back some to the world. Of course, donating and volunteering year-round is a wonderful thing to do, but it is understandable that it is not always an option. Donating your time or funds to a non profit has near endless advantages. You are helping those who are in dire need, and you can know that you are making a read difference in the lives of others. Whether you support or volunteer for a large project, or something as small as mentoring one person, your help can change the life of someone who otherwise may not have the opportunity on their own.

Giving money to organizations is a wonderful way to help. What you give will help provide the resources for those with specialized experience the means to move their cause. There are so many places to donate to, how do you know which is best? First, you need to decide what cause you would like to support. Once you have found a few foundations that interest you, it’s always a good idea to do a little research to find out how much of your money is going to the cause. Unfortunately, there are many out there who will abuse your funds, resulting in very little going toward those who need it most.

A few that we recommend are:

Cleaning For A Reason, an organization that we are partnered with to provide free house cleanings to women with cancer (Bit a Bliss receives none of that money.)

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where they rely solely on donations to care for children at no cost to the families.

Newborns In Need, whose mission, among other things, is to provide “care kits” of essential supplies to families who, when they leave the hospital with their newborn, have little more than the few basics that the hospital provides. This is also a great place to volunteer your time!

International Rescue Committee, an organization that helps communities worldwide, who have been devastated by disaster and poverty, to help people survive and build sustainable  lives. You can dedicate your donations toward a specific cause, or give to the organization itself. This one makes an amazing holiday gift!

Paws In The City, is a no-kill organization that seeks to find loving homes for pets that may not have a chance otherwise. They organize local adoption events, and is entirely volunteer driven, so you know your money is going straight towards the well-being of these furry friends. You can choose to donate, or volunteer your time.

If you are able, volunteering is a wonderful way to make a difference. You can help local organizations achieve their missions, and since you are not paid for your efforts, more money can go towards those you are trying to help, there are also lots of fundraising ideas for college that you can participate in, many kids don’t have the opportunity of attending school. To find a center that needs volunteers in your community, try, where you can easily find what you and your family are looking for.
